Out of the Mouths of Babes...

Since I started showing, I've gotten some pretty funny responses from the kids at school. Here are a few for your entertainment:

  1. I was walking by the three year old class as they were on their way to lunch, and one of the little boys randomly says to me, "You look different." As he says this, he is eyeing me up & down with a confused expression on his face and with his finger on his chin, like he just can't quite figure out why I'm suddenly looking "different" (as he so delicately put it).
  2. Another day I was waiting for the 3 year olds to pass in the hallway, and a little girl stops and asks me, "Why is your belly big?" (Oh honey, that is a dangerous question to be randomly asking people!) I told her that it's because I'm having a baby. She looks at me again and says, "Why are you having a baby?" [Ummm...I think that's a question better left for your parents to answer :) ]
  3. My class was in the gym for indoor recess with one of the kindergarten classes. A former student of mine went running by me, and then suddenly stopped and turned to me. As his BIG eyes settled on my belly, he exclaimed, "WOW, Ms Kim! You really are having a baby!" If he's saying this now, I wonder what he'll be saying come June when I'm waaayyy bigger and waddling...
  4. My students were playing with play-doh as they always do on Friday mornings. As I passed by, one of my little girls told me that she was making me out of play-doh (and let me tell you, play-doh is NOT very flattering...). "I'm making you as a snowman!!" she said excitedly. When I asked her if I look like a snowman, she very confidently replied that I do. I guess I can see the similarities with the head and round belly of the snowman, but I'd really like to know what on me resembles the snowman's wide bottom!

And then there are the random comments about the baby, like something one of my boys said to me awhile back. I had just explained to my students the day before why I was leaving early to go to a doctor's appointment. I told them that when you have a baby you have to go to the doctor a lot so that the doctor can make sure the baby is okay. The next morning this particular student walks in, and the first thing out of his mouth is, "Ms. Kim, are you taking your baby to the doctor today?" (As if I had a choice whether I take the baby with me or not...) When I reminded him that my appointment was the day before and that I wouldn't have another one until next month, he matter-of-factly responded, "Ok, I can live with that."

I knew pregnancy would be really exciting. What I wasn't expecting was how humorous it would be to experience it through the eyes of preschoolers!
